If there is one thing you absolutely need to find employment, it is your Curriculum Vitae.

A CV contains a detailed summary of one’s skills, educational background, achievements, and professional experiences. Basically, it tells recruiters and employers your professional journey.

The unemployment rate in India as of October 2020 was 6.90, which means that there are many job seekers. One can only imagine how many CVs a recruiter must receive in a day. Therefore, it is important to know what exactly it is that recruiters are looking for in a CV so that yours doesn’t get rejected at first glance.

What Recruiters Look for in your CV or Resume

Language and Grammar

By no means should there be any spelling or grammatical errors in your CV? Making such mistakes tells the recruiters that your communication skill is not good and that you are prone to making silly mistakes, which is not a flaw that anyone wants to invite into their company.

So, always double-check the spelling and grammar before you start sending out your CV. Moreover, use professional language.

Formatting

Formatting is important because your CV should entice the recruiters at first glance. There are many CV templates online to help you design yours to look its best. Now, after choosing a neat and professional template comes the structure. It is important that you arrange everything in sequential order.

Whether it is your educational qualifications or professional experiences, start from the latest. Also, highlight the dates so that it will be easier for recruiters to understand your total work experience.

Length

Generally, a CV should be 2 pages long at maximum. In those 2 pages, make sure that you mention all the positions you’ve held, roles, and responsibilities in brief.

If you have experience of more than, let’s say 10 years and you have worked for several companies, it is best to leave out the first two or a few roles that are not entirely relevant to the position you are applying for.

Educational Qualifications

List out all your educational qualifications in chronological order before or after the work experience section. Mention the name of your institution, name, of course, year of passing, and marks obtained. Your educational background lets the recruiters know how your course matches with the position you are applying for.

Extracurricular Activities

Ensure that you mention your participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, quizzes, music, or any competition along with any award, prize, or certificate you may have received.

This section is particularly important for freshers or those with only 1 or 2 years of experience. Recruiters will be able to assess your future potential and enthusiasm.

Internships

Whether you are a fresher or a professional with 1-2 years of experience, mention the internship that you have done. Internships show recruiters where you’ve started and evaluated your diligence.

Skillsets

It is important to mention all the skills you possess that are relevant to the position you are applying for. Sometimes, recruiters mention the specific skills they require in the job description and if you don’t mention them in your CV, they automatically reject your application.

Location

One common mistake that most job seekers make is the failure to mention location preferences. For example, if you are from Delhi and graduate from a college in Chennai, the recruiters may assume that you are willing to work in Chennai. So, rather than wasting both of your time, mention your location preference.
Gaps:

Recruiters tend to look twice if there is a long career or education gap. Since you can’t lie in a resume (as document proofing will be required), it is important that you have a good excuse for the gap.

So, now that you know what recruiters are looking for in a CV, go ahead and make the necessary changes because it will help you in catching recruiters’ attention for the next job search.
