Let’s be honest, we usually measure greatness based on our knowledge and how we go about utilizing it. In the world of technology, technical skills is how we’d probably measure one’s talent and success, ergo greatness.

These days, to be employed, basic technical skills are must to have. Most jobs require candidates who have certificates in basic computer skills.

What are Technical Skills? 

Technical skills are expertise that professionals possess by utilizing and achieving specialization in performing physical or digital tasks. There  is a plethora of technical skills used by experts in different fields such as mathematics, computer science, mechanics and information technology. Depending on the industry and job type, technical skills vary. 

Some of  the Technical Skills are:

Coding and Programming:

Computing, coding, HTML, debugging, IT, ICT, languages, etc. 

Technical Writing:

Subject matter experts, emailing, technical documentation, research, requirement gathering, etc.

Big Data Analysis:

Algorithms, data analytics, data mining, database design and management, statistical analysis, etc. 

Project Management:

Benchmarking, engineering, quality control, operations, project planning, etc. 

Social Media and Digital Marketing:

SEO, web analytics, content management system, digital media, etc.

How to add Technical Skills in a Resume:

Apart from resume, it is also important to add your technical skill in the cover letter. 

Adding Technical Skills to your Resume:

Do add the skills that are in high demand and which will make you a competitive candidate. 

However, avoid adding the basic technical skill that every techies usually put in their resume such as basic computer skills. Those are the ones that employers already know that a candidate who is applying for the role should possess and therefore need not be mentioned. 

Adding Technical Skills to your Cover Letter:

On your cover letter, it is not necessarily to add each and every skill you possess. Just list out a few of your most valuable skills, which you think are highly relevant for the job opportunity you are applying for. However, bear in mind that a cover letter should be brief and rather than promoting your skills, focus on how you as a candidate would be a great fit for the company.
