How to answer “Tell me about yourself” in an interview
Interviews can be so intimidating that sometimes we can’t even give proper answers to questions as simple as “Tell me about yourself”. When put on the spot, our mind goes blank.
More often than not, when asked to tell them about themselves, people tend to tell their entire life story starting from their birth. Sometimes, people share just their professional experiences. Everyone has their own responses.
But, what if you could do better to stand out?
Question: Tell me about yourself in an Interview
First, you need to know the reasons as to why interviewers ask this question. Not only is it the perfect icebreaker, but it also allows the interviewer to know how well your thought process works. They want to know what you think is important and how well you will fit in their organization. It also shows them your communication skill and how confident you are.
Now, if you are an experienced professional, know that this is your elevator pitch. Before answering take a few seconds to arrange your answer in your mind so as not to stutter. Start by telling them who you are professionally and about your skill sets and expertise that will be beneficial to the organization. Also, mention your accomplishments and accolades because this part of the interview is where you need to sell yourself to the interviewer. End it with what you can bring to the table if selected for the position.
Do not tell the interviewer about any of your personal life stories like “My name is….. I was born and raised in….I have 2 brothers and one sister….” and so on. Also, do not answer the question by asking what they want to know.
Lastly, always practice your answers before the interview.
Well now that you have your answer, we wish you the best of luck!
