How being a good team player can be beneficial for your career growth

Your path to success lies in you being a good team player. Did you know that? You see, while it’s true that being a team player helps in team productivity to generate revenue for the organization, it also helps the individual in advancing his/her career.

Being a team player teaches you about trust, reliability, commitment and of course, the value of teamwork. Now, these are all the qualities that employers look for in an employee when they consider someone for a critical position in the organization.

More often than not, employers are always on the lookout for someone to be their right-hand man or someone who they think will be able to lead certain projects or even a team. Now, that’s an easy way to get a promotion as well as a salary hike.

Joey Tribianni was not wrong when he said that selfless good deeds don’t exist. We believe that being a good team player is all for the success of the team. And that’s not wrong. However, even though we may not admit it, we do it for ourselves, don’t we? Even when we are part of the team, there is always a part of us that wants to be the best – be noticed and praised. That’s just human nature. We all have our competitive sides.

How exactly can being a good team player advance your career?

  1. Being part of a team that functions well gives you a sense of accomplishment and boosts your confidence. It allows you to grow as a professional.  You keep striving to do better and be better. The better you get at what you do, the higher your chances of climbing the ladder of success.
  2. Being a good team player teaches important lessons and skills such as time management, communication skills, problem-solving skills, crisis management skills, and so on that every good leader must possess. So, if you plan on being a leader anytime soon, you are already half-way there.
  3. Being a part of a well-oiled team makes you feel like you are part of a family, which gives you a sense of ownership. We always take good care of our assets, don’t we? We learn to value them and do everything in our power to see that things run smoothly. You see, this is when your work and worth gets noticed by your supervisors and employers. This is when you can even ask for a salary hike.
  4. One quality that organizations, particularly agencies, look for in every candidate is the ability to work under pressure. As a team, you have gone through incidents where last-minute crises occur and it’s all hands on deck. You learn to work under pressure and eventually learn to seek solutions rather than stress. This not only helps you professionally but also helps in your personal growth.
  5. Being a part of a team exposes you to the roles and duties of your colleagues that are usually different from yours. You get to learn more about other roles and get to know more about the ins and outs of your company. This knowledge will help you professionally in the long run.

As you can see, all the above-mentioned points are what every employer wants to see in someone they want to groom to play a bigger role in their organization.

So, yes, be a team player for your personal and professional growth.
